Yes , You need it for Enchants , Repairs and for alts I’ve quit wow atm im fully epic healer druid and fully minted *****
My repairs for raids are 30g each
enchants cost around 2k g and my ***** was exactly 2.5k gold and alot of work nearly got epic flying to

Absolutely. There are a lot of items that you can have crafted for you by enchanters/mages, and at that level, they cost a LOT of gold.
If you’re not interested in those types of things and just want the good items that you can pick up/win in the arenas and battlegrounds, then you’re correct, you don’t really NEED the gold (although who knows what will be available when WOTLK is released). Thats a great time to help out the less fortunately members of your guild who could use a little infusion of cash.

Prices for lvl 70 items are INSANE.
Fortuatly, there are a lot of daily quests at 70 that pay rather well.. but your still gonna have to keep at em if you dont wanna end up broke.

Assuming that your all epiced out and have all the enchants, you would only need the gold to buy food, flask, and pots for when your raid. And then you’ll need some more gold for your repair bill.
unless of course your in a guild that provides all of those.
And if you want the mount that carries a vendor or the mount that carries out passenger in the lich king, you should save up BIG TIME.
